MH370 tragedy: rescue national image, MAS and tourism

Today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Nasib says in Beijing about the unprecedented disappearance of MH370; it tests the relationship between Malaysia and China and the Government is trying it's best to continue finding the ill-fated aircraft. We need to help the relatives of the 239 victims.
The MH370 tragedy affects the national image, the national carrier, MAS, and the tourism industry. What are the efforts to rescue these victims?

The MH370 disappearance remains a mystery

The acoustic ping believed to be from the black box of the ill-fated MH370 made Australia send the mini-submarine drone, Bluefin-21, to scour over 800 square kilometres of the seabed of southern Indian Ocean. But, Bluefin-21 did not find any trace of the aircraft. Thus, the disappointment sparks off outrage, uproar and more speculations, especially among relatives and friends of the 239 victims of the disaster.

Announce the total subsidies to Proton since 1983

Before Proton Holdings Berhad was established in 1983,  we told the Government that it was difficult to sustain the car maker. The main objective was said to create a downstream industry such as spare parts for a section of the community.
In the past 31 years, how much public funds has been pumped into the company? We do not know. A figure of RM200 million has been mentioned as annual allocation for 'research and development'. Last year two figures were mentioned, namely RM74 billion and RM18. 8 billion, as subsidies to Proton.

Solid waste (rubbish) saga

The solid waste (rubbish) saga in Malaysia includes four small incinerators as found in Pulau Langkawi, Pangkor, Tioman and Cameron Highlands which were late for over two years, up to 966 days. The incinerator project in Labuan has ended in the Tribunal; the site is overgrown with trees and shrubs. The Government has spent nearly RM200 million. Negotiated tender, technology and management are questionable. Meanwhile, the solid waste saga continues.

Leachate Treatment Plant in Taman Beringin Kepong?

For over 40 years, residents of Jinjang and Kepong face pollution and bad smell from open dumpsites and then solid waste transfer station and leachate in Taman Beringin, Kepong.

In 2002, the authority appointed Pollution Engineering San Bhd to build a Leachate Treatment Plant, treating 200 cubic metres of leachate a day at the transfer station. It did not work.

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall appointed Worldwide Engineering Sdn Bhd in 2012 to construct a plant to treat 300 cubic metres of leachate daily. It also does not function properly.

Since last year,  the Housing and Local Government Ministry has taken over the transfer station and the leachate plant. It should ensure that both are working effectively, getting rid of the foul odour.

Sanitary landfill must be truly sanitary

Today, we visited the Bukit Targar Sanitary Landfill, Selangor. It deals with 2500 tonnes of solid waste (rubbish) a day.  Hitherto, we have found it sanitary.
How many sanitary landfills are there in Malaysia? Some say there are only three. Others mention there are 8. The Government must ensure that sanitary landfills are truly sanitary.

Race and religion in political games

In Malysian plural society, we encourage moderation and respect for religions. Some continue to use race and religion for political games.
President of Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (ISMA) Ustaz Abdullah Zaik states that 'kedatangan pendatang Cina ke Tanah Melayu bersama penjajah British suatu ketika dahulu adalah satu bentuk pencerobohan'.
When did aborigines' (Orang Asli's) ancestors settle in Semenanjung? When did Abdullah Zaik's ancestors arrive? My ancestors were in Kelantan before 1820.

The Chaos at the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT)

DAP MP for Kepong Dr Tan Seng Giaw calls on the Immigration Department, the Malaysian Airport Holdings Berhad (MAHB) and AirAsia to solve the congestion at LCCT and to ensure speed, efficiency and safety at LCCT and then at KLIA2.

MAHB looks at KLIA2 very differently from AirAsia. Hence, AirAsia decides reluctantly to move to KLIA2 from LCCT on May 9, not on May 2. To move from one place to another is complicated.

On May 4, 2014, there was congestion and chaos involving about 1,000 passengers at the LCCT. There were complaints.

Immigration Director –General Datuk Aloyah blames AirAsia for the incident as the latter did not shift to KLIA2 on May 2 and many personnel had been moved there. On the other hand, Senior Manager of MAHB Datuk Azmi Murad insists that everything went on as usual and the incident was due the peak hours from 3 pm to 5 pm when many planes landed.

The mystery of the missing MH370 has affected the image of Malaysia. Any signs of incompetence such as unusually long queues at the 17 immigration counters make things even worse.

The Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hisham says that KLIA2 is the biggest airport in the world for low-cost carriers. If KLIA2 including its immigration counters can provide the best service in the world such as speed, efficiency and safety, then the country may recover faster from the bad image.

Local Governments and dangerous trees

Planting trees is important. But, there must be effective maintenance. Some municipalities or city halls take a long time to act after receiving complaints about trees on the verge of falling. For example, two weeks ago, residents in Jalan 24/62B, Taman Menjalara, Kepong, told Kuala Lumpur City Hall  (DBKL) repeatedly that a tree was about to fall.  They waited. Two days ago, a storm caused the tree to fall on electricity or telecoms lines. DBKL cleared the debris on the road.
Yestetday, a tree in Taman Kepong fell, killing a 41-year-old woman. This is near Menjalara. Only heavy damage and human casualties from falling trees prompt the authorities to take immediate action.
