On Merdeka Day, we hark back to 1957 and the Constitution such as the fundamental rights and religious freedom. The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib should review these rights and the measures to prevent all forms of extremism.

The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib says:" This ( RM6 billion ) is an investment, not a bailout. " Malaysians are very concerned because billions of ringgits (40? 50?  60? billion ) have been used to support MAS.

MAS Restructure:all conditions must be fulfilled!

Khazanah National Berhad Managing Director Tan Sri Azman submits a RM6 billion plan to make MAS profitable in three years, laying off 6000 jobs from nearly 20, 000, amending contracts between suppliers and MAS and so forth. Lets hope that all conditions are fulfilled. SIA and Cathay Pacific thrive.

Monitoring the standard of medical schools in Malaysia?

There are relatively better medical schools in Malaysia such as University of Malaya and University of Science. The standard among colleges in this country and those recognized ones overseas varies. The quality of doctors are different.  But the Government has yet to show its effectiveness in monitoring the 32 or 34 schools in the country and hundreds overseas. In future, do we want to see doctors driving taxis for a living?

MH17 crash : The nation observed one minute silence.

The remains of 20 victims were brought by MAS Boeing 777 jetliner from Amsterdam to KLIA1 and parked near the Bunga Raya building. Each was given military honour. At 10.55 am, the nation observed one minute silence.

Prevent misconduct and custodial deaths?

Custodial deaths such as the 2003 Dharmendran case cause furore. Since 2005, we call for the setting up of Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission ( IPCMC ). In 2009, the Government formed the Enforcement Agencies Integrity Commission, covering 21 agencies like police and  customs. But, misconduct and custodial deaths continue.

World standard universities?

University ranking: Harvard 1, UM 377, USM 487, UKM and UPM over 500.
     This is the list for 2014 given by the research centre  top world universities, Shanghai Transport University.
     Each centre, including The Times, has its criteria for assessing universities. Whatever disagreement on certain criteria, all 20 public universities in Malaysia must strive to attain world standard.
     Two years ago, UM was ranked over 400. Although USM is regarded by the Government as 'special', it is behind UM. Why do many lecturers leave USM?
     Government policy and attitude affect the standard of a university.

Will 2014 Malaysian economic growth be over 5.5%?

Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti says that the 2014 economic growth (GDP ) has been revised to over 5.5 %, not 4.5-5.5%. But the business sector does not reflect such a forecast. Business people face difficulty.

Facebook: good or evil?

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Shabery says that the Government never has intention to ban Facebook as more than 15 million users in Malaysia are registered with it.

MH17 crash : August 22 is the national day of mourning

The Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin has announced August 22 as the national day of mourning with 15 bodies of the victims plus one Dutch citizen. We hope that all the remains will be brought back as soon as possible.
     All the victims should be accorded respect and dignity. All Malaysians should take part in the national mourning.

MH17 crash: How many more agreements?

The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib says that he has reached another agreement with Ukraine to allow the team to access the crash site to search and recover the remains of the victims. How many more agreements?

Dengue:Malaysian Cabinet approves RM27 million.

Today, the Cabinet allocates RM27 million to fight the spread of dengue. We hope the measures taken by the Health Ministry such as the eradication of Aedes mosquitoes are effective. There should be no wastage.

Before making a decision to implement the project. the Solid Waste Management Department must carry out an environmental impact assessment ( EIA ). This will tell the people the possible effects of the project on the environment of Kepong.

The fierce fighting in Donetsk, Eastern Ukraine, affects Australian, Dutch and Malaysian team to investigate and recover remains of 298 victims. We hope that the work to identify bodies of victims goes on smoothly in the Netherlands. The families of the victims wait.

Anti-corruption : service commission

Malaysian Anti-corruption Commission (MACC) must be independent,  responsible only to parliament. This requires constitutional amendments.

Ebola Emergency : Malaysian needs preventive measures.

There are many causes of deaths and injuries in society. For example,  there are about 6000 deaths due to traffic accidents in Malaysia.
     Ebola virus is virulent. In the last four months, West Africa has nearly 1000 fatalities due to the virus. The death rate is about 60%. Millions of Muslims including West Africans and Malaysians visit Mecca as pilgrims every year. We need preventive measures.

Ebola Emergency:Malaysian Health Ministry dithering.

Ebola virus is virulent. Since February this year,  over 900 patients with the disease have died in West Africa such as Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.
     The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared international health emergency. Nigeria has followed suit. Muslims including those from West Africa and Malaysia visit Mecca, Saudi Arabia,  to perform the haj and umrah.
     Malaysian Health Ministry seems to be dithering, basking in self-content. Is it ready to face the epidemic?

Nahas MH17 : Petang ini, Menteri Dalam Negeri Datuk Seri Zahid melihat pasukan siasatan Malaysia bertolak dari Kiev ke Kharkiv, kemudian Donetsk, berhampiran dengan kawasan bencana. Selamat jalan. Dua hari ini, pasukan Australia dan Belanda sibuk mencari dan menemui jasad mangsa yang masih berada di lokasi.

Ebola epidemic: disastrous results?

Ebola epidemic: Ebola virus was first noticed in Congo. It causes bleeding, stroke and shock in victims. There is no treatment.
     This time the epidemic in West Africa has killed over 700 people. Two American volunteers have contracted the disease,  one in Liberia and the other in Nigeria. They have been taken by special aircraft to Atlanta, the infectious diseases centre in the United States.

MH17 crash : Out of the 298 victims, some 80 bodies may be still at the site. The Australian and Netherlands team of investigators has begun to discover remains of victims at the location.
