Clean & Beautiful City & Local Agenda 21

DAP National Deputy Chairman and MP for Kepong Dr Tan Seng Giaw calls on the Kuala Lumpur Mayor Dato' Sri Ahmad Fuad to announce the details of the Clean and Beautiful City campaign including Local Agenda 21.

We need to improve the management of solid waste. Humans create organic and non-organic waste.

On 28/7/2010, Dr Tan responds to the Mayor's statement that the strategy for waste management system is not good enough.

Frequently, we have brought up to Kl City Hall the problems of waste disposal as we receive complaints about them regularly. The issue of solid waste is complicated including the lack of civic consciousness and its ineffective management.

On 22/7/2010,I told Dato' Sri Fuad about illegal dumpsites such as the one at Jinjang South squatter area. He mentions that the City Hall spent RM200 million to clear 33 illegal dumpsites.

KL city folks produce over 2,000 tonnes of solid waste a day, requiring RM150 million annually for waste management.

Apparently, the Government launched a solid waste awareness campaign, so that the public would avoid wastage and would separate solid waste which consists of 45% food.

KL has a Clean and Beuatiful City campaign, including the pioneer project of Local Agenda 21. This project involves collecting 14 tonnes of organic waste daily from hotels, markets and houses. Then, the waste is processed into compost.
